Gem State Firearms Training started when Maricela 'Marcy' Bailly began getting requests from friends and family for private shooting instruction. What began as informal one-on-one sessions grew into a full training operation as students consistently asked for more advanced courses. Bailly founded the company to focus on firearms safety education and building confidence for new and aspiring gun owners throughout Kootenai County.

The operation is built around personalized instruction rather than large group classes. Bailly and instructor Ryan work with students from complete beginners to those seeking intermediate skills development. Their approach emphasizes hands-on learning and practical application of firearms fundamentals.

Gem State offers several core training programs designed for different skill levels and needs. Their Idaho Enhanced Concealed Carry Weapons Permit class is an 8-hour certification course that meets state requirements for CCW permits. This comprehensive course covers legal requirements, safety protocols, and practical shooting skills.

Private training sessions run two hours and cover basic shooting fundamentals including grip, sight alignment, sight picture, stance, and trigger control. First-time private sessions cost $150, with follow-up training priced at $75. These sessions accommodate both beginners learning basic firearm handling and intermediate shooters working on specific skills.

The handgun cleaning and safety course is a 2-hour class teaching proper disassembly, cleaning procedures, reassembly, and function testing. Students bring their own unloaded handguns in cases, and all cleaning supplies are provided. This course costs $60 and includes parts identification and maintenance education.

The women's shooting group meets regularly for practice sessions focused on skill enhancement rather than basic instruction. These 2-hour sessions cost $40 and include shooting from multiple distances with challenging drills. The group provides a supportive environment for women to practice with like-minded shooters.

Gem State also offers NRA Range Safety Officer certification, a full-day course covering range operations, safety procedures, emergency protocols, and firearm malfunction handling. This $125 course is held at a private location in Athol and runs from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

The AR Armorer and Builder Workshop teaches participants about semi-automatic rifle platforms across all calibers and manufacturers. No prior experience is required, and rifles can be provided for those who don't own one. This 3.5-hour course costs $150 and includes hands-on building experience.

Gem State plans to add several new programs including Home Protection courses, Refuse to be a Victim training, and Youth Safety & Training levels I and II. These additions reflect the company's commitment to comprehensive firearms education across different demographics and skill levels.

The operation maintains partnerships with local ranges, primarily using the Coeur d'Alene Rifle & Pistol Club for most training sessions. Some specialized courses are held at private locations in the Athol area, with exact addresses provided to registered participants.
