Shooting on Public Land

Federal land is open to target shooting unless posted otherwise. Know the rules before you go.

BLM Land

→Target shooting generally allowed unless posted otherwise

→Standard rules: no shooting near roads, trails, buildings, or campgrounds — minimum 150 yards

→Use a safe backstop. No shooting into the air or across roads. Pack out all trash.

National Forest

→USFS allows target shooting in most National Forests, but individual forests can restrict

→Fire restrictions may prohibit steel targets or tracers during high fire danger

→Many western NFs have dispersed shooting areas; eastern NFs tend to be more restrictive

Public Land Rules Vary by State

Some states add restrictions on top of federal rules.

Indoor or outdoor, pistol or rifle — pick the setup that fits your goals.

Indoor vs Outdoor

Indoor: Climate controlled, backstop provided, $15–30/hr. Good for pistol training. Most restrict above .223.

Outdoor: More space, longer distances, fewer caliber restrictions. Weather-dependent but real shooting experience.
