Full description and what we offer
Kona Guns and Ammo has been operating since January 2013 and is one of Hawaii's most recognized firearms shops. The business is located in Kailua-Kona in the Luhia Center II complex (74-5599 Luhia St #E1), across from Ola Brew and next to Pacific Island Fitness.
The core of what they do is mandatory safety training. In Hawaii, you cannot legally purchase a handgun without completing a Basic Handgun Safety course taught by an HPD-verified instructor. Kona Guns and Ammo runs these classes at least once a month at a private ranch facility.
Classes fill quickly due to high demand. Space is limited and you must pay in full ($220, non-refundable) and complete registration and liability waiver before the class date. If you can't attend, you can transfer your spot to someone else or be added to a waiting list.
Hawaii's firearms laws are strict. You need this course to: - Purchase any handgun - A valid certificate (not older than 4 years) is required before applying for a handgun permit to acquire - Purchase long guns - This course OR a Hawaii Hunter's Education certificate works for rifle and shotgun permits (hunter ed is good for life) - Meet state requirements - The notarized affidavit you receive is mandatory for handgun permits
Once you complete the course and get your affidavit, the process works like this: 1. Purchase your firearm from Kona Guns and Ammo or another authorized dealer 2. Schedule an appointment at the Police Station firearms section 3. Background check takes 14-40 days (free, after the one-time $42 fingerprint fee) 4. 30-day window to pick up your handgun 5. 5 days to register it with the police department
The shop's philosophy is straightforward: firearms are tools for home defense, sport shooting, and hunting. They support Second Amendment rights and believe that responsible, law-abiding citizens with access to firearms creates a safer community. They stock a wide selection of firearms and ammunition and emphasize legal compliance with all state and federal laws.
