Big Timber Outfitters is a family-run hunting operation based in central Idaho, specializing in guided backcountry adventures in the Lemhi Mountain Range. Operating under special use permit on the Salmon-Challis National Forest, they hunt primarily in Game Management Unit 29 near Salmon — remote, game-rich terrain most hunters never access.
Expect long days in the saddle through steep timbered canyons, tracking game alongside experienced guides and hard-working hounds.
Hunts operate from classic wall tent camps with wood stoves and hearty meals. All hunters carry Garmin inReach devices for safety and communication in remote areas with no cell coverage.
They train hounds for bear and mountain lion hunts using real tracks in Idaho's backcountry. Handlers work with patience and respect, building nose, stamina, and grit. Many clients fly dogs in from across the country to train with their experienced team.
For those interested in the chase without the harvest, Big Timber offers catch-and-release mountain lion and bear experiences — get up close, photograph, and watch Idaho's predators in their natural habitat before release.
