Elk hunts operate from base camp up the St. Joe River. Archery hunters walk 6-10 miles through steep terrain at elevations from 3,900 to 6,900 feet. Dennis learned to bugle early in his career and it's now second nature. Rifle hunters typically go on horseback up to 12 miles into backcountry, then walk in to hunting areas.
Bear hunts use bait stations set up weeks before hunters arrive. Spring hunts take advantage of hungry bears coming out of hibernation. Hunters sit in tree stands or ground blinds until dark. Idaho allows 2 bears in their area.
Wolf hunting runs most of the year with electronic callers. Idaho allows up to 15 wolves in their hunting area, plus 15 more with trapping license.
"Hunt hard, Hunt safe, Finish the game" - their camp motto
Hunters meet the crew at Super 8 Motel in St. Regis, Montana the night before their hunt. It's about an hour drive to base camp from there. They'll pick up fly-in hunters or you can follow them in your own vehicle.
