Full description and what to expect
The Free Pheasant Hunt is a no-entry-fee shooting and bird dog competition organized by the Challis Idaho Youth Bird Dog Association. This event combines field hunting skills with marksmanship, giving participants a chance to work their dogs in realistic pheasant hunting scenarios across Central Idaho ranch land.
Participants will engage in live-bird pheasant hunting with shotguns in a field setting. The competition tests your ability to locate birds, work your dog effectively, and execute clean shots in natural hunting conditions. This isn't a clay target course—expect to hunt actual pheasants across working ranch terrain.
This event is designed for: - Hunters with shotgun experience and proficiency - Bird dog owners looking to test their dogs in competition - Upland game hunters wanting to sharpen field skills - Community members interested in youth-focused hunting programs
You should be comfortable with shotgun safety, capable of hiking rough terrain, and prepared for variable field conditions typical of Central Idaho.
The hunt takes place at the Central Idaho Rod & Gun Club and local ranch property in the Challis area, providing authentic pheasant habitat and working space for dog teams.
