GunDogDoc isn't a retail operation—it's an educational hub created by Dr. Joe Spoo, DACVSMR, a veterinarian who's been treating hunting dogs for over 25 years. Spoo is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, and is one of only a handful of such specialists in private practice worldwide. More importantly, he's the only one whose primary focus is hunting dogs.
After graduating from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001, Spoo spent two years in northern Minnesota before relocating to Sioux Falls, South Dakota—an area with abundant hunting dogs and endless field opportunities. His approach to canine health is "cradle-to-grave," meaning he manages every phase of a dog's athletic life, not just when problems emerge.
Unlike generic pet dog resources, GunDogDoc focuses exclusively on the different nutritional needs, hazards, and health issues that hunting dogs actually encounter in the field.
"To further the health and knowledge of hard-working hunting dogs by creating educated and empowered dog owners."
Spoo's goal with courses and content isn't to replace your veterinarian—it's to help you become a more informed owner who can provide care when needed and advocate effectively for your dog's health when professional intervention is required.
Hunting dogs operate under completely different physical and environmental demands than household pets. Their injuries, nutritional requirements, and recovery protocols are often vastly different. After 22 years evolving the site, Spoo finally has the technology and time to deliver consistent, high-quality content.
