The American Legion Post 21 in Independence, Missouri, was chartered in honor of 20-year-old Sgt. Tirey J. Ford, who was killed in action during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive on September 29, 1918 while serving with Battery C, 129th Field Artillery. For a number of years, there has been a competition between Post 21 and Post 5 in Jefferson City for the bragging rights of being the largest post in the state. However, Post 21 has the privilege of being the home post for another WWI veteran of the 129th Field Artillery, former President Harry S. Truman.
