Full description and what we offer
Tall Timber Lodge sits in Pittsburg, NH—the heart of some of New England's best upland bird country. The alder and poplar bogs here hold resident woodcock and migrating "flights" from Canada that show up October through early November. Ruffed grouse are the main draw: Pittsburg's mix of hardwood forests and softwood thickets creates ideal habitat, and active timber management keeps early-growth areas productive.
You can hunt proven hot spots or explore your own secret covers across miles of prime grouse terrain. The lodge handles the planning—they provide advice on finding birds and can arrange hearty bagged lunches for the trail.
Several weekends in October, the lodge stocks pheasant to introduce a different flavor of game bird hunting to the north country.
Pittsburg sits in roughly 300 square miles of forest—balsam fir, beech, cherry, and birch, with 90% in a conservation easement. This remote wilderness opens to public hunting via logging roads, 4WD trails, or on foot.
Two hundred pound-plus bucks are common. Yearling bucks average 125 pounds with four to six points already showing.
Bucks hitting 150 pounds or more qualify for the "Tall Timber Big Buck Club"—a tracking system for the serious hunters.
The wild berry crops that fatten deer also draw bears. Abundant natural food sources mean plenty of pursuit opportunities.
New Hampshire moose hunting runs by lottery. If you draw a tag, Pittsburg's large moose population gives you a solid shot at success. The lodge can guide you through the process.
The Caron family runs both the lodge and the Rainbow Grille on-site. Lakeside cabins, woodside cabins, luxury houses, and lodge rooms accommodate different group sizes. Multiple dining plans tie hunts to meals.
