The Suburban Pistol League isn't new to this. They've been conducting NRA Bullseye matches for more than half a century, and they're still going strong. The league traces back to Newark Rifle and Pistol Club, founded in 1932, which grew to over 20 members across multiple squads. After venues changed hands—from Seton Hall to Kearny PAL to The Bullet Hole—the league found its permanent home at the Union County Pistol Range in Springfield.
Every Wednesday evening during season, the league runs the NRA .22 Bullseye course of fire at 25 yards. Here's the format:
| Fire Mode | Rounds | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Slow Fire | 10 | 10 minutes |
| Timed Fire | 10 | 20 seconds (5+5) |
| Rapid Fire | 10 | 10 seconds (5+5) |
| Total | 30 rounds | Maximum score: 300 |
"Safety is the first rule at the range." This isn't marketing speak—it's the actual rule, and range officers enforce it.
- •Gate opens: 7:00pm
- •Match begins: 7:30pm
- •Eye and ear protection: Required at all times
- •New shooter orientation: Available—experienced shooters help explain the course of fire
- •Mandatory safety course: Required before your first visit
Newcomers should arrive early to sign in, meet members, and get comfortable with the range layout and procedures.
The Suburban Pistol League consists of four competing teams: - Newark Rifle and Pistol Club - Suburban Lawman - Union County Pistol Team - Tri-Caliber Rifle and Pistol Club
They follow NRA rules and regulations, but the core mission is simple: shoot for fun and enjoy the sport.
