GGS Outfitters has been running guided hunts out of Swan Quarter since 1997. Captain Brad Gurganus and his crew focus on three things: tundra swans, waterfowl, and black bears in the waters and pocosins around historic Lake Mattamuskeet.

• •Waterfowl - The area is a major wintering ground for tundra swans. You'll also find bluebills, redheads, mallards, pintails, and sea ducks on Pamlico Sound.

• •Black Bear - Hyde County earned the nickname "Bear Central." The Raleigh News & Observer noted the area has "the perfect combination of thick pocosin vegetation that is lush with berries in the summer and agricultural crops that help bears pack on the pounds in the fall and winter."

Hunts include lodging. Guides show you the impoundments, family farms, and waterfowl areas. Reviews consistently mention how hard the guides work—even on slow days, they treat it as a personal challenge to put you on birds.
