Jim Heckert started with two Pointer pups at 13 and never looked back. After a tour in Vietnam with the U.S.M.C., he apprenticed under legendary trainers—Clair Gross in Pennsylvania, Dr. Tom Flanagan at Grouse Ridge in New York and Georgia, and Hall of Famer Fred Bevan. He's placed dogs from Canada to Florida, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, in competitions ranging from derbies to all-age stakes.
Jim spent five years as General Manager and Dog Trainer at Wiregrass Plantation in Albany, Georgia—a first-class operation hunting 60 to 80 days a year on wild quail with 40 top dogs and mule-drawn hunt wagons. He's also worked the famed Dixie Plantation (18,000 acres, home of the Continental Championship) and continues to train dogs for established kennels like Gwynne McDevitt's near Philadelphia.
"We take care of your dog just as if it is our own."
Every dog gets quality nutrition, large sanitary chain-link kennels, and fresh water daily. Jim and Jimmy feed Purina Pro Plan Performance (30% protein, 20% fat, real chicken base)—formulated for endurance, lean muscle, and efficient oxygen metabolism.
Health management includes: - Daily kennel inspections - Monthly heartworm program (no charge) - On-call veterinary support from Dr. Charles Fager, D.V.M.
Equipment: - Dogtra training collars - Garmin tracking collars (AKC-approved for field events)
With field trial placements in the hundreds—likely pushing a thousand across American Field and AKC competitions—Jim and his son Jimmy have trained multiple dogs with 50+ placements each. If you're looking for someone who's "been there, done that," they're the real thing.
