Location details and information

Backwoods HRC organizes hands-on training events throughout the Charlotte area for hunting retrievers and sporting dogs. Whether your dog is picking up their first duck or has already titled in competitions, there's a place for you at their training days.

Training days typically run from 7 AM to 1 PM. The club sets up on land or water with multiple training scenarios. You bring your dog, your equipment (leads, e-collars), and a willingness to learn—the club provides throwers, birds, and bumpers.

"This is not a competition. We are training."

The focus is on making your dog successful. Members with years of training and judging experience offer feedback before, during, and after each run. They'll ask what your dog is currently working on in training, then guide you toward appropriate exercises rather than pushing beyond readiness.

You don't need to be a member to come to training days. Families are welcome. If you like what you see, membership is available via mail-in application.

At a typical training day you'll see: - Labrador Retrievers - Chesapeake Bay Retrievers - Standard Poodles - Golden Retrievers - Boykin Spaniels - Flat Coat Retrievers - Other hunting breeds

Backwoods HRC sponsors a spring hunt test held at H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area in Cheraw, South Carolina—the only South Carolina state park available for field trials and retriever competitions. Registration opens through huntsecretary.com.

Members emphasize respect for property owners, gun safety (primer loads only, safe handling required), keeping dogs under control on leash or in kennel when not running, and helping with setup and breakdown. Show up ready to run when it's your turn.

  • Founded by hunters for hunters. The club is run by dog owners and trainers dedicated to improving the breed through quality breeding and training.
