Your trophy's quality starts in the field, not on the workbench. Foster provides clear guidance on proper handling:

Big Game - Skin down over shoulders and neck - Sever neck at base of head - Keep cool—don't get wet or blood on hide - Freeze if possible and bring to the taxidermist ASAP

Birds - Never gut the bird, handle by feet only - Don't wring the neck - Keep blood off plumage - Place in airtight plastic bag with feathers straight, then freeze

Fish - No stringers or baskets - Ice immediately - Don't gut - Wrap entire fish in wet newspaper - Protect fins and tail - Seal in plastic bag and freeze
