"I take great pride in my hunting ethics, and live for the success of myself and my clients. I have hunted nearly every mountain range in West Texas, and have harvested/guided some giant animals in the past." — Jim Breck Bean, Owner
HWO treats every sheep hunt like a governor's tag. All hunts are conducted on private landowner tags, giving each client exclusive rights to their hunting area. They harvest mature 8+ year old rams on average, with many meeting Boone & Crockett record book minimums. Ten-day hunts include 2 professional guides, meals, lodging, field care, and top-quality pictures. Texas Parks & Wildlife conducts annual census surveys and issues "general" permits in October, with hunts valid through the following September—giving clients an 11-month window.
The Trans-Pecos and Panhandle regions offer some of the best mule deer hunting in North America. Texas is 90% private landowner tags with over-the-counter licensing. Most of HWO's ranches operate under MLDP (Managed Land Deer Permits), extending season from the first Saturday of November through the end of January—three full months with rifle. They run high success rates on mature 6+ year old bucks ranging 160–210". Management hunts are available at discounted rates and receive equal treatment to trophy tags. Hunt length: 3–5 days.
Texas elk hunts are often overlooked, but HWO treats them as a serious "sleeper" option. Free-range bulls range from the low to mid 300s with occasional larger trophies. Since elk are considered exotic in Texas, hunters can use any weapon, any time—allowing high success rates on guaranteed tags. Five-day hunts include 2 guides, meals, lodging, and field care.
HWO has access to multiple private ranches totaling over 1,500,000 acres across the High Desert of the Trans-Pecos. Aoudad hunts run August–October (rut in full swing) and February–April (bachelor groups). They offer 1x1 guided 3½-day packages and can accommodate groups up to 8. HWO has extremely high success rates on 30"+ rams, with several topping SCI record books. Nearest commercial airports: El Paso or Midland, 100–200 miles away.
Pronghorn antelope, dry ground mountain lion, and select exotics are also available.
General Manager Jasper Klein was born and raised on a large cattle ranch at the base of Chinati Mountain. He spent 3 years chasing elk through Wyoming before returning to Alpine to guide at HWO.
Guides include Steven Ryan (guided 30+ free-range bull elk scoring 380–442 inches over nearly two decades), Creed Cade (Master of Resource Management from Sul Ross State University), Josh Coffey (started guiding at 17 in Texas Hill Country whitetail), Blake Olsen (Western Oregon hunting background with black tail deer and Roosevelt elk), Ty Baker (grew up on his family's ranch southwest of Van Horn), and Levi Wade (ranching and outdoor background from Marfa, Texas).
Camp cooks Janna Stubbs and Javier A. Martinez handle meals. Javier is a culinary school graduate with 24 years cooking experience, including 10 years with P.F. Chang's and local El Paso restaurants. Mariana DeLao rounds out the kitchen, a Van Horn local with lifetime kitchen experience.
