Full description and what we offer
Hi Mountain Bison & Buffalo Hunts operates a private reserve in Peoa, Utah—the only place hunts actually happen—where you can pursue American bison without spending a quarter million dollars on a public land tag or winning an auction you'll never win.
"Hunting a bison will be something you never forget. Unfortunately, hunting a bison or a buffalo is a dream that will be out of reach for most hunters" due to public tag scarcity. That's why Hi Mountain exists.
They maintain a herd of 70+ buffalo and offer guided hunts across multiple age classes and sexes:
| Hunt Type | Price Range | Deposit |
|---|---|---|
| Yearling Buffalo | $3,000–$3,500 | $1,000 |
| 2-Year-Old Bulls | $5,000–$5,500 | $1,000 |
| 3-Year-Old Bulls | $7,000–$7,500 | $2,000 |
| Trophy Buffalo Bulls | $8,000–$10,000 | $2,500 |
| Cow Buffalo | $4,000–$4,500 | $1,000 |
Unlike public hunts, there's no limit on how many buffalo you can take—hunt one bull or three in the same trip.
Guides meet you at the start, help you learn buffalo behavior, assist with the stalk and shot, then handle field dressing and loading into your vehicle. They've partnered with local meat processors if you want professional processing rather than DIY butchering.
A 1,000-pound buffalo typically yields around 560 pounds of meat—significantly more meat than elk or deer, even accounting for percentage yield.
Buffalo has superior taste and health benefits compared to beef. Over the past several years, demand for bison meat has climbed as hunters and consumers realize the difference. This increased market demand means Hi Mountain has to compete for quality breeding stock, which factors into hunt pricing.
They started with a small herd and have grown it through sustainable breeding to 70+ head. They actively purchase new animals to increase genetic diversity. Hi Mountain frames itself as part of the modern buffalo conservation movement—keeping the species alive while allowing hunters to experience what pioneers and mountain men did.
Before European settlement, buffalo populations ranged from an estimated 25 million up to 70 million across North America, mostly concentrated on the Great Plains between the Mississippi and the Rockies. Westward expansion and systematic hunting in the 1800s—including railroad hunting parties killing 250+ buffalo per day—decimated the population to just hundreds by the 1880s.
Modern conservation efforts have recovered the species to roughly 500,000 on private lands and 30,000 in public herds. Hi Mountain is part of that recovery.
