Full description and what we offer
Wesley Hodges guides hunters through the Virginia Uplands and Blue Ridge foothills, hunting the birds that live there on their terms. These aren't casual walks in the woods—they're challenging, physically demanding days covering 6-8 miles of rugged terrain through thick forests and ridgelines.
The operation targets multiple species depending on season and location:
Hunters need a Virginia hunting license for all trips. HIP registration is required for migratory birds like woodcock.
Three professionally-trained dogs are the backbone of every hunt:
| Dog | Breed | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Duke | Llewellin Setter | Pack leader, 4 years old, "all business" |
| Ella | Llewellin Setter | 2 years old, specialized East Coast bloodline |
| Chaga | English Cocker Spaniel | Flushing and retrieving specialist, 1+ years old |
The dogs stay active year-round with consistent training. Their work is what makes finding birds in these hills realistic.
Every hunt is customized to your group—weather, skill level, physical ability, and preferences shape the plan from the moment you contact Wesley. The scouting happens before season starts, identifying sign and habitat that hold birds on the National Forest lands and private property the operation has access to.
Full-day hunts include: - Professional guide and trained dogs - Route tailored to conditions and bird activity - Guns and gear provided (bring your own if preferred) - Field lunch - Bird processing if you want to keep them
For multi-day experiences, Wesley's farm sits on 13 acres along the James River in West-Central Virginia with Blue Ridge Mountain views. Two glamping tents offer comfortable accommodation with all amenities, and meals are prepared on-site. These trips combine multiple days of hunting with lodging, meals, and downtime on the property.
The operation accommodates hunters of all types:
191 Bridge Street, Eagle Rock, VA 24085 (540) 225-3024 [email protected]
"Wes's upland bird hunting experiences are second to none. He addresses every detail from scouting out the best locations and covers to preparing delicious lunches in the field. His dogs are a pleasure to watch work and hunt with." - David Stevens, customer review
The farm is also home to a fly fishing operation on the New River, James River, Jackson River, and Smith River for smallmouth bass, brown trout, and rainbow trout—meaning you can combine a full sporting experience in one trip.
