Applied Technical Services (ATS) is a full-service forensic engineering laboratory specializing in firearms testing and analysis. Located with operations across multiple states, ATS handles complex firearm investigations, manufacturer testing, and legal/litigation support.
ATS conducts inspection and testing on:
- •Handguns — including drop safety testing per California requirements (11 CCR § 4060)
- •Rifles — ballistic performance, overpressure analysis, bolt failure investigation
- •Shotguns — cylinder explosions, barrel rupture analysis
- •Firearm components and assemblies — trigger mechanisms, bolts, barrels, magazine systems
ATS uses non-destructive and destructive testing techniques:
| Method | Application |
|---|---|
| X-ray & CT scanning | Internal inspection without disassembly |
| Trigger force analysis | Safety mechanism evaluation |
| Drop testing | SAMI and California requirements |
| Endurance testing | Hundreds of thousands of firing cycles |
| Obstructed barrel testing | Pressure/rupture investigation |
| Metallurgical analysis | Material failure root cause |
| Chemical analysis | Ammunition and material composition |
| Ballistic testing | Overpressure, velocity, chamber pressure |
ATS regularly investigates:
- •Metallurgical failure causes
- •Ballistic overload conditions
- •Ammunition failures and case head separations
- •Firearm bolt failures and explosions
- •Gunsmithing defects
- •Metal injection molded (MIM) part failures
