Full description and what we offer
Sand Mountain Shooters Club started in 1979 as a gunsmith operation and has grown into a full shooting facility with repair services, retail sales, and instruction. The founder, Dan Cooper, has been involved with firearms since childhood and built this place on the principle that quality takes time—and shortcuts aren't an option.
Shooting Ranges (Saturday Public Hours)
They run separate rifle and handgun ranges, both covered with shooting benches. Setup includes:
Public range access is Saturdays and Sundays, 10am-6pm. Visitors from out of state should call ahead at (256) 593-8027 to arrange an appointment. Residents interested in membership are encouraged to visit on Saturdays.
Full Gunsmith Services
This is where they've built their reputation. Every gun brought in gets:
They handle general repairs on most firearms. Some guns can't be safely repaired—they'll tell you straight up if yours is one of them. For specialized work like stock refinishing, rebluing, or rebarreling, they farm out to specialists or provide referrals.
Common jobs typically return in 7-10 days. Complex work takes longer based on priority (hunting/recreational seasons matter). They stock both new and used parts, including obsolete items. When parts don't exist, they build them.
Retail Sales
They don't stock everything—only products they've personally tested and use themselves. The philosophy: 30 years of sorting through the noise means they know what actually works. They service everything they sell.

"It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do." — John Ruskin
They're explicit about this: they don't compete on price, and they won't claim "lowest prices" or promise to beat everyone's deal. What you get is old-fashioned business—family-owned and operated since 1979. Quality takes time. Shortcuts don't happen here.
Four causes account for 90% of their repair work:
1. Improper ammunition 2. Operator error 3. Improper maintenance 4. Inadequate lubrication
When a gun leaves Sand Mountain Shooters Club, it works like it should—period. If a malfunction happens later, you'll know it wasn't their work.
