Full description and what we offer
Phalanx Academy operates a structured approach to defensive firearms training. Each weapon platform—handgun, carbine, and shotgun—follows the same three-module progression:
Handgun Modules ($225-$325 per day) cover the fundamentals: safety, nomenclature, mindset, marksmanship, manipulation (reloads and malfunction clearance), maintenance, carry methods, presentation, positions, movement, and injury techniques. You'll work through these with your own 9mm, .40 cal, .45 ACP, .357 SIG, or 10mm (nothing under 9mm). Required: a serviceable handgun, three magazines, strongside holster, and support-side mag pouch.
Carbine Modules ($325-$425 per day) train you on semi-automatic rifles in .223, 5.56, 7.62, or 7.62x51. The curriculum mirrors handgun training but adds rifle-specific nomenclature and technique. Each module progresses ammunition requirements: MOD I fires 150 rounds carbine plus 150 pistol; MOD II adds 200 pistol rounds; MOD III bumps to 250 pistol rounds. Phalanx is direct about why this matters: when a criminal threat is armed with a rifle, bringing only a handgun is like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Shotgun Modules ($325 per day) address a platform many overlook. According to their instructors, the shotgun is actually the most complicated system on the civilian market—"if you are not shooting, you are loading." Courses require a serviceable 12-gauge pump shotgun plus a handgun. MOD I shoots 100 buckshot, 50 slugs, and 150 pistol rounds. MOD II increases to 100 buckshot, 75 slugs, and 200 pistol rounds. MOD III maxes out at 100 bird, 100 buck, 100 slug, plus 200 pistol rounds. A side saddle is highly recommended.
Intro to Medical Response ($325 per day) combines Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED certification with trauma response training led by Dr. David Cadogan, MD, an emergency medicine specialist with 20+ years in the field who serves as TACMED for Anchorage PD and Alaska State Troopers SWAT. The second half covers M.A.R.C.H.—Massive Hemorrhage, Airway, Respiratory, Circulation, Hypothermia/Head Injury—plus tourniquet application, scene safety assessment, good samaritan law considerations, and infant/child/adult care protocols. Your Red Cross certification is valid for two years.
Beyond core modules, the academy offers: - MRDS Handgun training (mini red dot sights) - Intentional EDC Handgun courses - Lowlight & Night Vision shooting - Practical OC (Oleoresin Capsicum/pepper spray) - Foundational Self Defense - The FORGE program - Personal Protection Inside & Outside the Home courses - Contract Agency Firearm Qualification - Military & Law Enforcement focused instruction - Kaleo Course and course preparation
Phalanx Academy's ethos: "To advance individual skill sets to support our community of vigilant lawful citizens." Their FAQ directly addresses common questions—why you can't bring a micro gun or revolver to their classes (not conducive to prolonged training), why red dots beat irons sights (target focus preserves situational awareness), and why modern tech and methods matter when lives are on the line. They advocate for caliber choice based on ballistics, not nostalgia—9mm dominates their recommendations alongside .40 cal and .45 ACP for defensive use.
