Location details and information
Grand Canyon Council operates the official NRA Basic Shotgun and Shotgun Instructor Certification program for Boy Scouts of America leaders and instructors. Since BSA national policy requires all firearms instruction to be conducted by NRA-certified instructors, this training fills that gap directly.
The program offers three pathways depending on your background and goals:
Instructors must be at least 21 with shotgun shooting experience. Assistant Instructors need to be 18+. Apprentice Instructors can be as young as 13 if they have prior shotgun experience.
If you're already an NRA instructor in another discipline and completed B.I.T. within the last two years, you can skip the B.I.T. requirement and focus on the Shotgun Instructor course.
| Option | Cost |
|---|---|
| Full course with B.I.T. | $220 |
| Course without B.I.T. | $180 |
| NRA Instructor credentialing (2-year) | $30 (member) / $50 (non-member) |
| Shotgun rating add-on (existing NRA instructors) | $10 |
NRA credentialing fees are paid directly to the NRA. Full payment upfront is required, and registration is non-refundable. You must attend the complete session and pass both written and practical exams to earn certification.
