Full description and what we offer
Shooting Help operates a firearms training operation in Bakersfield, California, centered on proper gun handling, safety, and defensive shooting skills. Their philosophy is straightforward: "With Proper Training, Every Law Abiding Citizen has the Ability Safely, Effectively, Efficiently and Confidently Operate a Firearm."
The Combat Focus® Shooting course is their signature offering—a 1-2 day intensive program designed for defensive firearm use in real-world scenarios. This isn't target range marksmanship; it's built on how bodies actually react during critical incidents.
Students fire 800-1200 rounds during the course. The program emphasizes specialty drills and training methods students can continue practicing after completion. CFS is based on evolving research about how bodies perform under stress and has been refined by certified instructors teaching thousands of students worldwide.
The CCW certification breaks into two parts:
| Part | Duration | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Classroom | 4 hours | "The Tactical Triad": Mindset, Equipment, California CCW law |
| Range | 4 hours | Live-fire skills test and man-on-man shooting competition |
The class moves at a fast pace and covers not just permit requirements but also makes students "a more aware, safe, competent, self-confident firearm user."
Important: In Kern County, you apply for the permit FIRST before taking the class. The class certificate is valid for 90 days. This prevents you from losing class fees if your application is delayed beyond that window.
Shooting Help offers multiple NRA courses including: - Basic Pistol (10 hours) - Safety, gun handling, marksmanship fundamentals, storage, pistol sports - Rifle Training - Rifle-specific instruction - Shotgun Training - Shotgun handling and fundamentals
All NRA courses include a handbook outlining safety procedures and typically complete within 15 hours. No prerequisites required. Upon completion, students receive course certificates.
Run by George Semchak Jr., Shooting Help focuses on practical firearms education. They emphasize that proper training is necessary—whether you already own a firearm or are considering purchasing one. "The Combat Focus® Shooting Course is not designed to make you the best shooter you can be on the range, rather its goal is to help you quickly develop fundamental skills that you can apply in a worst case scenario defensive shooting situation."
Shooting Help provides detailed guidance on navigating the Kern County CCW application process. Sheriff Youngblood has a history of fair interpretation of "Good Cause" requirements. Key points:
George will review Good Cause statements before submission (email to [email protected]). Shooting Help cannot write the statement for you—it must be your authentic explanation based on your life circumstances.
