Georgia Firearms & Security Training Academy (GAFASTA) provides firearms training and qualifications for armed security guards, private detectives, law enforcement officers, and civilians across Georgia. The academy serves Atlanta, Gainesville, Athens, Rome, Savannah, and surrounding areas with instruction that exceeds state minimums.
Chief Instructor: Rodney Smith
Chief is a Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified firearms instructor, Georgia Board of Private Detective and Security Agency certified firearms instructor, and NRA Training Counselor (License# CFTR001222). His experience breaks down complex skills into digestible, confidence-building stages.
GAFASTA operates an 80-acre private outdoor firearms training facility located at 3161 State Hwy 11, Monroe, GA 30656. They also travel to customer locations for on-site training and qualifications.
Court-Ordered Firearms Training ($200) - Basic Pistol Safety, Shotgun, and/or Rifle Class - Covers grip, hygiene, safety, eye dominance, sight alignment, sight picture, stance, trigger control, magazine loading/unloading, trigger reset, breath control, malfunction drills, ammunition identification - Pistol, ammunition, ear and eye protection included - Designed to build confidence, knowledge, and skills for first-time or court-required students
Armed Security Guard & PI Annual Pistol Qualifications ($140 + $80 rental) - Annual qualification requirement for armed security guards and private investigators - Classroom instruction: Use of Deadly Force (OCGA 16-3-21), liability, de-escalation, situational awareness, weapons safety, range safety briefing - Tactical shooting techniques: proper grip, stance, shooting while moving, cover usage, flashlight shooting, malfunction/stoppage drills, tactical and combat reloading, room clearing, close quarters combat, failure drills, multiple target engagement, transverse shooting, drawing techniques - Gear requirements: pistol, holster (belt loop or paddle only—no inside-pants or shoulder holsters), 3 magazines, 100 rounds ammunition, tactical flashlight - 48-hour reschedule notice policy; 72-hour cancellation notice required ($30 fee)
Armed Security Guard Shotgun Training & Qualifications ($300 + $80 rental) - Exclusive course for armed security guards who've completed basic armed training and want to carry shotguns on duty - Classroom: field strip, nomenclature, loading/unloading (dummy rounds), stance, dominant eye, tactical and combat reloading - Range: 15-round course of fire with combat and tactical reloading, shooting while moving - Equipment: pump action 12-gauge tactical shotgun, 25 rounds 7 or 8 birdshot, 5 rounds Double 00 Buck, ear/eye protection, sling recommended
P.O.S.T. One-on-One Advanced Pistol ($200 + $80 rental) - 2.5-hour private instruction for P.O.S.T. law enforcement and state correction officers - Classroom: proper grip, trigger control, trigger reset, drawing, holstering, magazine changes, combat/tactical reloading, malfunction drills (with dummy rounds) - Range: shooting from 15 yards and 7 yards, drawing techniques, trigger reset, malfunction drills, dry fire practice - Glock 19 and Glock 45 with MOS available to rent if needed - Gear: duty pistol, duty belt, 3 magazines, 100 rounds FMJ ammunition, ear/eye protection, weather-appropriate clothing, no open-toed shoes
GAFASTA provides: - 9mm Pistols: Glock 19 and Glock 45 with MOS ($80 rental) - Holsters: Belt-loop and paddle styles included with pistol rental - Ammunition: Included in most courses; additional rounds available - Ear & Eye Protection: Included in training courses - Shotgun Rental: $80 for qualified students
Continuing Education Requirements: Armed security guards and private detectives must complete 8 hours of continuing education every 2 years with pistols and shotguns used on duty. GAFASTA's courses fulfill these state mandates.
Certificate Reprinting ($30 per certificate) - For students needing replacement certificates from GAFASTA's PI, unarmed, or armed security guard training - Submit student name, attendance dates, and photocopy if available - Director of Training emails replacement certificates
