Full description and what we offer
Aspen Outfitting Company operates the Aspen area's only NSCA-certified shooting school, offering clay target shooting instruction for shooters of every experience level. Whether you're picking up a shotgun for the first time or looking to refine your technique, their NRA and NSCA-certified instructors handle everything from safety basics to personalized coaching.
All four-hour guided outings include:
Check-in & Gear Up Arrive 15 minutes early at either the Woody Creek Shop (2858 Upper River Rd., next to Woody Creek Tavern) or St. Regis Aspen location (315 E Dean St., by special arrangement). Meet your instructor and grab coffee and fresh donuts from the espresso bar before heading to the range.
Safety First Your NSCA instructor reviews range rules, safety protocols, and firearm handling with all guests—beginners and experienced shooters alike. This is non-negotiable and takes 15-20 minutes.
Gun Fitting Shoot at a patterning plate so instructors can match you with the right shotgun for your frame, strength, and shooting style. Size matters when it comes to fit and accuracy.
Shoot Clays Once fitted and trained, you're breaking clay targets. Your instructor provides real-time coaching on form, technique, and follow-through. The private range is less than 30 minutes from the shop and has full trap and skeet setups.
Final Round & Wrap
Gratuity for your guide is customary—20% or more is standard if the trip was especially memorable.
Trips run rain or shine. The only exception is lightning, which forces guides to pull clients off the range. If bad weather is forecasted more than 48 hours before your trip, you can reschedule free of charge (based on availability). Weather within 48 hours means no refund—they work in Colorado conditions.
Bring layers and a rain jacket. The Colorado sun is intense; sunscreen, a baseball cap, and sunglasses (in addition to shooting glasses) make a huge difference.
What to Bring: - Closed-toe shoes (absolutely required) - Baseball cap or sun hat - Sunglasses or sunglasses with UV protection - High SPF sunscreen - Rain jacket (Simms Waypoints recommended) - Sun shirt or UPF hoody - Snacks (lunch is included, but bring extras if you want)
Many items can be purchased through their online shop and picked up on trip day.
Children under 10 cannot participate in clay target shooting for safety reasons. Kids 10 and older are welcome if they: - Can and will follow ALL safety protocols - Understand the responsibility of operating firearms - Can exercise good judgment - Will take instruction from guides
Parents must sign waivers confirming their child meets these standards.

Jokingly known as "golf with guns," clay target shooting is quickly becoming a popular option for guests. Whether you're a complete beginner or an accomplished shooter, Aspen Outfitting prioritizes a healthy respect for firearms and safe gun handling above all else.
Aspen Outfitting Company also offers guided fly fishing trips (summer and winter), private water access, float fishing, upland bird hunting, horseback riding, and whitewater rafting. The clay target shooting program fits into their year-round guided activities model—they maintain multiple shops, multiple instructors, and coordinate complex logistics for outdoor recreation in the Roaring Fork Valley.
