Flatirons Firearms Training, named after Boulder's iconic sandstone formations, is a USCCA-certified instruction outfit run by Tom Craig—an NRA-certified pistol and rifle instructor who also works as a Chief Range Safety Officer at northern Colorado ranges.

They focus on what matters: turning anxious beginners into safe, competent shooters and confident concealed carriers. Tom specifically highlights his passion for introducing newcomers and women to responsible gun ownership in a non-threatening environment.

• •Intro to Handguns — Fast-paced 1-hour beginner class covering safety basics, revolver vs. semi-auto differences, grip, stance, and sight picture. Live-fire on the range is optional after.

• •NRA Basic Pistol Shooting — 6-8 hour comprehensive course including:
• •Essential gun safety rules
• •Pistol types and selection
• •Shooting fundamentals and positions
• •Common errors and how to fix them
• •Cleaning and maintenance
• •How to maintain skills long-term

You'll get an NRA certificate acceptable for CCW applications.

• •USCCA CCW & Home Defense Fundamentals — Covers handgun basics, conflict avoidance, awareness of surroundings, the psychology of violent encounters, and the legal aspects of using deadly force. Includes home security strategies and a gear guide for concealed carry.

• •Handgun Cleaning & Maintenance — Field stripping, component identification, proper solvents and lubricants, and tools for keeping your gun running reliably.

Range fees typically run $25 or less. You bring your own firearm and ammo; ranges sell eye/ear protection if you don't have it.

Beyond teaching, Tom is an NRA hunter safety card holder (since age 10), hunts elk, deer, pheasant, and turkey, and recently took his first javelina hunt in Arizona. He reloads ammunition, scuba dives with a PADI Rescue Diver certification, and camps, fishes, and ATVs when not on the range. He's also a member of the Colorado Enforcement Firearms Instructors Association.
