Full description and what we offer
Double H Outfitters was founded by Casey and Camie Herod, hunters who built the business on a straightforward principle: handle every detail so clients can focus on the hunt. Based in Craig, they operate across northwestern Colorado's most productive hunting units, working public BLM land and private ranches.
They guide hunts for five species:
| Species | Season | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Elk | September–January | 4×4 to 6×6 bulls; 350-class or better in trophy areas |
| Mule Deer | October–Mid-November | Bucks ranging 160–190 class; landowner vouchers available |
| Pronghorn Antelope | August–October | 70-inch or better; best scoring 88 inches; 500,000 acres across GMUs 2, 201, 3, 301, 11, 211 |
| Mountain Lion | November–March 31 | 10 hunts/year; nearly perfect success; professionally trained hound dogs |
| Black Bear | Spring & Fall | Often added as a second tag to other hunts |
Hunts range from 3 to 7 days. They also offer limited combination hunts if you want multiple species in one season.
Many Colorado hunting units require 10–18 years of accumulated points to draw a tag. Double H has landowner relationships that let them offer vouchers, getting you a tag immediately without waiting through the draw system.
They handle all the confusing licensing paperwork—nonresident requirements, voucher applications, gear advice—starting with your first phone call.
In the Field: - Guides get you within range using spot-and-stalk, calling, or ambush tactics depending on terrain and animal behavior - Field dressing and recovery after harvest - Animal transported to processor - Standard guide tip: 10–15% of hunt value
After the Harvest: - Processing through trusted partners: Mountain Meat and H&H Processing (both in the Craig area) - Taxidermy typically through Mountain Man Taxidermy in Craig - Shipping assistance for meat or trophies if needed - No on-site processing at lodges—they load you up for the trip home if you want to process yourself
Clean, comfortable rooms with full amenities. Three meals daily plus snacks and refreshments, with sack lunches for all-day hunts. Their cooks are on-site—tip accordingly.
Guides are CPR and First Aid certified. They emphasize ethical hunting practices and participate in Colorado's Ranching for Wildlife program on some leases, allowing extended seasons.
Their guides share a lifelong passion for hunting and know the terrain intimately. Mountain lion hunts specifically use professionally trained hound dogs with bloodlines from respected breeders like Van Johnson, Jeff Allen, Dale Cameron, and David Hill.
