Northwest Connecticut Firearms Training is run by Steve Pyskaty, a certified firearms instructor since 1994 with over 25 years in law enforcement. Since the major firearms law changes in Massachusetts in 1998, he's been the go-to instructor for civilians and police departments across Connecticut and Massachusetts. Over 1,000 classes taught. That's not hype—that's a track record.
8-hour class, $125. This is what you need if you want a Connecticut pistol permit or to buy ammunition. You get classroom instruction on the NRA basic pistol course or Connecticut State Police-approved curriculum. Each student gets the NRA manual or state handouts to follow along with the PowerPoint, plus additional materials.
The hands-on portion happens on the range. You'll handle, load (with snap caps), fire, unload, and clean a pistol or revolver. Live fire happens with a .38/.357 pistol or revolver. Finish with a multiple-choice test. Pass it, you get your certificate.
8-hour class, $125. For Massachusetts residents getting a License to Carry (LTC Class A) or Firearms ID Card (FID, Class C). The classroom covers everything on pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns—plus all the laws about what you can and can't do at home and in vehicles.
Then you move to the range for hands-on work. Handle, load, fire, unload, and clean all four firearm types. Multiple-choice test at the end. Certificate upon passing.
1-day course, $160. Get certificates for six different states—MA, CT, NH, ME, FL, and UT. With these six, you can legally carry concealed in 39 states total. The class is one day; applying to each state is on you. Note: both the pistol permit and multi-state course together run $160 total.
$150 per session. You have your permit and a new gun, or you want to shoot better. Private sessions cover advanced techniques, firearm breakdown, shooting, cleaning. Range time is one-on-one with the instructor. Pistol, revolver, rifle, or shotgun.
$100. Learn proper ways to carry concealed with different holsters and methods. Also covers how to conceal yourself and use barricaded positions. The personnel protection portion adds defensive tactics and how to keep your firearm from an assailant.
$80. Basic self-defense instruction for home invasion, carjacking, or street attack scenarios. Learn how to break or block attacks—armed or unarmed—and ways not to become a victim. Indoor and outdoor awareness.
$80. You got your permit and gun. Now what? This class covers what you can and can't do with it—transportation, carrying, where you can and can't go, all the laws. Walk out knowing the rules.
