Full description and what we offer
Shooting Sports Academy LLC operates a full training facility at 27 Main Street in Monroe, Connecticut. They're built around one simple idea: training that actually prepares you for the real world, not just paperwork.
Their core offering is the Connecticut Pistol Permit Certification Course ($185), which combines online learning with hands-on practical training under a certified instructor. You get lifetime access to their e-manual for reference, and they walk you through the permit application process afterward. The online component lets you learn at your own pace, then you come in for the practical work with targets, revolvers, and semi-auto pistols included.
They're also an NRA CCW Instructor Training facility. Contact Mahesh Reddy at 203-685-5356 if you're looking to become an instructor yourself.
Pistol Skill Builder runs on Wednesdays in 2-session formats ($375). Each session includes:
The curriculum covers fundamentals in Session 1—grip, stance, aiming, breathing, follow-through—then moves to multiple targets, distances, and one-hand shooting in Session 2. You'll learn to visualize and call your shots while actually hitting what you aim at.
Mastering the Handgun ($495) is a five-session progressive course (1.5 hours each, max 10 per class). You move through beginner fundamentals, then intermediate work on shot process and concealed carry intro, then advanced concealed carry accuracy and speed/accuracy combinations. Each session builds on the last.
Defensive Pistol Course (2-3 sessions, $400-600) trains real-world scenarios—not operator-level tactics, but what civilians actually need. Sessions cover draw-from-holster fundamentals, emergency stoppage drills, body mechanics, cover versus concealment, shooting from cover, and low-light/no-light conditions. You'll understand physiological and psychological effects of stress and learn flashlight techniques. Limited to 8 shooters per session.
Tactical Thursday runs twice monthly (2nd and 4th Thursday, 6-8:30 p.m., $75/session). You test your EDC gear, work on speed and accuracy, dial in red dot sights, and build consistency for concealed carry. Requires a $175 assessment with their chief instructor first.
If you have a Connecticut permit, you can use their range ($30/hour or $20 for half hour). They have a full array of pistols to rent—good way to try before you buy. Out-of-state permit holders, current/former LE, and military can rent after demonstrating proficiency.
They also offer several membership tiers:
| Membership | Cost |
|---|---|
| Basic | $350 |
| Premium | $850 |
| Premium Plus | $1,500 |
Their team has backgrounds in law enforcement and competitive target shooting. They stay current on Connecticut firearms law and teach practical application, not just theory.
