Great Atlantic Firearms Training operates out of Southbury with a straightforward mission: teach the knowledge, skills, and attitude needed for safe firearm use. Jim Docherty leads the operation as an NRA Training Counselor and Chief Range Safety Officer with 50+ years of shooting experience across pistols, shotguns, and rifles. He's joined by Casey Docherty, an NRA Instructor, competitive shooter, and Army National Guard Military Police officer.
CT Pistol Permit Courses - Required for Connecticut carry permits. Full day course ($125) or blended option ($85) combining online study with classroom and range time. Covers gun safety, revolver and semi-auto operation, ammunition selection, pistol selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, and marksmanship. Students qualify on the range with live fire and receive the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook plus certificate.
Rifle Training - Eight-hour NRA Basics of Rifle Shooting course ($125) required for Connecticut Long Gun Eligibility Certificates. Covers rifle parts and operation, ammunition, shooting from bench rest, prone, sitting, standing, and kneeling positions. Includes classroom materials, targets, lunch, and certificate.
Utah Concealed Carry Permit - Four-hour classroom course ($100) for Utah CCW permits, accepted in 32 states. Covers handgun fundamentals, safety, ammunition, Utah firearms law, and federal firearms laws.
Range Safety Officer Certification - Nine-hour course ($125) for experienced shooters. Limited to 10 students per class. Covers RSO roles, range SOPs, emergency procedures, and firearm malfunctions.
Instructor Certification - For experienced shooters wanting to become NRA Certified Instructors or Chief Range Safety Officers. Taught by Jim Docherty, an NRA Training Counselor.
15-port indoor range designed for comfort and safety, with electrical target retrieval allowing shooting from 25 to 75 feet.
The Southbury classroom is climate-controlled with a state-of-the-art SIRT LASR X training system that lets students see proper grip and aiming technique before their first range visit. All classes include lunch and beverages.
