Full description and what we offer

BlackJack Outfitters holds exclusive outfitting rights to nearly 2,000 square miles of prime black bear habitat in Manitoba—larger than the entire state of Delaware. The region is one of North America's densest black bear populations, and Manitoba's conservation commitment ensures both robust wildlife numbers and a top-tier hunting environment.

Daily encounters with bears in their natural habitat are the norm, not the exception.

Matt Epp took over BlackJack Outfitters in 2005 after spending his career guiding hunts across Canada. He started at 18 guiding caribou in northern Manitoba, then expanded into moose, mountain caribou, grizzly bears, and muskox. His 20+ years in the field inform every aspect of the operation. He doesn't make promises—he works to deliver results.

The area is known for trophy black bears and colour phase bears, but size restrictions protect breeding females and the local population.

Packages include:

  • Accommodations: Fully-furnished cabins with satellite TV, Jacuzzi tubs, fire pits, screened-in porches, and provided bedding
  • Meals: Kitchen stocked with groceries; nightly dinners provided
  • Transport: Airport pickup from Winnipeg Sunday afternoon; return trip Saturday morning ($100 round trip if needed)
  • Guides: Expert guided hunts with daily bear encounters
  • Firearm Options: Rental guns available (see below)

Packages routinely sell out each season. Book at least 60 days ahead.

No licensing required. BlackJack provides a selection of calibers, all paired with proper ammunition and topped with 3-9x scopes. You get direct supervision from guides (required by Canadian law for non-residents)—no paperwork headaches, no extra baggage fees.

You can bring up to 3 firearms on one form. More than three requires a Non-Resident Firearm Declaration Continuation Sheet (RCMP 5590).

Crossing the US/Canada Border:

  • Driving: Get a Certificate of Registration for Personal Effects from US customs, list serial numbers. Declare at Canada customs, verify storage and documentation.
  • Flying: Use Canadian Air Transport Security Authority guidelines for firearm/ammunition transport.

Return to US: Declare firearms and provide your original Certificate of Registration.

  • Every hit is considered a kill and ends the hunt
  • Muzzleloaders must have .50 caliber minimum barrel (Manitoba law)
  • Colour phase bear size restrictions apply—guides explain these
  • Violating size restrictions carries $1,000 fine plus government penalties
  • Carry your hunting license at all times (obtain via Manitoba e-licensing)

BlackJack provides a recommended packing list:

  • Head-to-toe camouflage (gloves, face mask)
  • Thermacell bug repellent with refills
  • Waterproof rubber boots
  • Protective bow/gun case
  • Tree stand cushion and safety harness
  • Fishing rods and tackle (for downtime)
  • Scent-free or ScentLok clothing
  • Required hunting license(s)
