Full description and what we offer
Mile High Outfitters covers more ground than most Idaho hunting operations. They hold permits for approximately 650 square miles across the Frank Church Wilderness and Salmon River Mountains, including fish and game units 26, 27, 20-A, 36, and 36-B.
The wilderness area sits in the center of Frank Church Wilderness with a long rifle season (September 15 - November 18). Getting there requires flying clients into backcountry airstrips since it takes two days to pack stock in.
The front range area runs between Stanley and Challis, bordered by the Salmon River Mountains, Sawtooth Mountains, and Boulder/White Cloud Mountains. More accessible but limited tags. Has both rifle and archery seasons.
Travis and Brenda Bullock bought Mile High Outfitters in 1995. Travis started working for other outfitters in 1984 at age 15. Their sons Charlie and Clay represent the fourth generation of Bullocks hunting this area - their great-grandfather Claude took grandfather Craig elk hunting on Big Creek in 1957.
"The oldest hunter we have ever taken was 94. He was 5' 10" and 150 pounds. He lion hunted with me 4 times and killed 3 cats."
| Hunt Type | Ratios Available | Areas |
|---|---|---|
| Elk/Mule Deer | 1×1, 2×1, Drop Camp | Front Range |
| Wilderness Hunts | 1×1, 2×1 | Wilderness |
| Lion Hunts | 1×1 only | Both |
| Bear/Wolf | 1×1, 2×1 | Both |
| November Deer | 4×1 | Wilderness |
Guided hunts work better than drop camps because they use horses and mules daily to cover more country with experienced guides.
Mile High holds an allocation of guaranteed non-resident elk and deer tags through Idaho Department of Fish and Game. These tags became more limited by units in 2020, so they recommend booking early.
Licensed and Insured: - Idaho Outfitters and Guides License #7940 - Bonded and insured - Member of Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association - Permitted on Challis BLM, Salmon/Challis Forest, and Krassel Ranger District
They maintain 40 horses and mules, breaking one or two new animals each year. The operation includes riding saddles, pack equipment, tents, trucks, trailers, snowmobiles, and ATVs.
250-pound weight limit on riders - they'll weigh you with clothes on if you look heavier than your contract states.
Zero tolerance for unsafe gun handling. First offense gets a warning. Second offense means getting hauled back to the trailhead and sent home.
Scope turret rule: Anyone bringing scopes with long-range turrets must have covers on them. Exposed turrets mean you're asked to leave.
150 miles of streams and 20 high mountain lakes in their guiding area. Drop camp fishing trips work well for both high mountain lakes and wilderness stream fishing.
They also offer meat packing services, but you need to book before your hunt starts - don't wait until after you harvest an animal.
Three options if you need to cancel: 1. Use trip cancellation insurance (highly recommended) 2. Find someone to fill your spot 3. They'll try to fill your spot and refund minus 10% fee
