Full description and what we offer

Ford's Custom Gun Refinishing in Crystal River, FL takes on projects from everyday shooters and collectors alike. If your firearm's finish is worn, pitted, or just plain ugly, they handle the restoration—from simple refinishing to extensive metal work.

Ford's works on carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum (with limitations). They do NOT work on pot metal or cheap cast parts except for blasting and Cerakote. Titanium and 416R stainless steel are textured or Cerakoted only. Grips are outside their scope.

FinishDescriptionDurability
Hard ChromeMost durable and corrosion resistant. Matte, brushed (400 grit), or bright (mirror)1-year warranty
NickelClassic soft yellow glow. Popular for restoring vintage pistols and revolvers1-year warranty
CerakoteModern ceramic coating. Works on all metal types1-year warranty
BluingTraditional finish options1-year warranty
Gold Plating24-karat decorative finish only7-day inspection period
Custom CombinationsMixed finishes (e.g., polished nickel with gold appointments or case color accents)1-year warranty

Aluminum firearms get special treatment. Since aluminum loses integrity each time it's refinished, outcomes aren't guaranteed and don't carry warranty coverage. All aluminum work requires a Release of Liability form.

Just because a gun looks beat to hell doesn't mean it's beyond saving. Ford's specializes in excessive pit removal, welding, and hand filing to restore firearms that arrived in rough condition. Their before-and-after gallery shows transformed S&W revolvers, Colt Pythons, Remington rifles, and vintage Savage pistols—guns that looked hopeless until Ford's got to work.

Two engraving options: - Custom Engraving – Your design, their laser - Factory Roll Mark Restoration – Redo factory markings that have worn or damaged

All turnaround times are estimates only and subject to change.

  • Whole handguns: 5-6 months average
  • Whole long guns: 8-9 months average
  • Partial projects: 6-12 weeks

Specific estimates provided after intake and work order completion. Factors affecting timeline aren't detailed publicly—contact them for your project's expected completion.

Ford's recommends UPS or FedEx. USPS is only allowed for long guns (not handguns) per ATF rules.

From an individual (non-FFL): - Handguns must ship via private courier (2-day or faster, signature required) - Long guns can ship ground with signature - Use ShipMyGun.com – partnered with UPS, allows direct return to your address instead of through an FFL - Alternatively, use an FFL as your transferee (customer pays transfer fee upon receipt)

From an FFL dealer: - Any courier (USPS, UPS, FedEx) is acceptable - Authorized person fills out work order with payment info - Copy of FFL and contact details must be in package

Packaging requirements: - Oil all items well to prevent rust in transit - Seal in plastic bags or wrap thoroughly (Florida humidity is aggressive) - Use bubble wrap and fill empty box space—no movement allowed - Hard cases unnecessary for handguns (adds weight = shipping cost) - For long guns: remove wood or separate barrel from receiver if possible - Disassembled firearms must include legible parts list – Ford's isn't liable for missing pieces without documentation

Critical: Include your completed work order IN the shipping box, even if emailed beforehand. Any projects without paperwork are treated as gifts or charged storage rent.

All pricing is estimates only and subject to change.

  • Payment usually not required upfront – exceptions: parts orders, wood work, rust bluing, condition charges, projects over $1,000, flood/fire deposits
  • Return shipping calculated when ready to ship – you'll be called with final balance including return cost
  • Payment due within 2 weeks – after that, storage fees apply
  • Payment required before shipment
  • Accepted: Major credit cards, online invoicing, cash, check, money order
  • Pay-go plans available – request on work order upon submission

All Ford's finishes covered by 1-year warranty except: - 24-karat gold (7-day inspection period only—it's decorative) - Aluminum finishes (no warranty; outcomes not guaranteed)

What's covered: - Manufacturing defects and finish issues - 30-day inspection window after receipt - 30-day function check period for firearms

What's NOT covered: - Normal wear and tear - Mishandling or improper maintenance - Customer negligence - Aluminum re-refinishes beyond first attempt

  • No progress photos or completion photos sent. All projects must be inspected in person upon return. If concerns arise during work, Ford's reaches out with direction—photos included if needed.
