Ed Dabney is a former law enforcement officer and certified NRA handgun instructor who's been hunting and shooting his entire life. Over four decades, he's trained people on safely handling and accurately shooting all types of firearms. He ran security at his church and previously worked as a licensed hunting guide and outfitter in the Wyoming Rocky Mountains.
He built Dabney Defense around one principle: real-world self-defense training that actually prepares you for the situations you might face.
This is where most students start. No gun ownership, no prior experience, no exceptions—this course is designed for absolute beginners who want to get skilled and confident.
What's Covered: - Safety rules, how guns actually work, loading/unloading - Proper grip, stance, aiming, breath control, trigger control - Dry fire practice (empty gun) in the classroom until you're completely comfortable - Live fire on the private range with real ammunition - Mental preparedness and real-world decision making
The Reality Focus: - How to avoid needing your gun through situational awareness - Specific scenarios: parking lots, gas stations, convenience stores, shopping malls - Responses to threats, robberies, kidnapping, carjacking, home invasions, active shooters - Legal and moral aspects of deadly force—when it's justified, when it's not - Choosing the right handgun, holster, and carry method for you - Empty-hand defense techniques in case you need to grapple before drawing
Class Details: - Maximum 5 participants so everyone gets serious shooting time and personal attention - $175 per person (observer fee: $25) - Can be scheduled any day except Sundays, split across multiple days if needed - Georgia Weapons License helpful but not required
Safety First: Five hours of classroom and unloaded drills before any live fire. All guns inspected on arrival. Zero live ammunition in the classroom. On the range, guns stay unloaded until the shooter is on the firing line. Ed or his assistant stands within arm's reach of every shooter.
After the basic course, step up to this 4-hour range-only training.
Four hours on your private firing range. You don't need to own an AR-15—Ed supplies one if you don't have your own.
Progression: - Basic fundamentals of AR-15 operation - Intermediate drills building to practical application - Work on speed with accuracy in realistic scenarios and positions - Multiple targets, reaction targets, moving targets - Shooting from 25 to 100 yards with different types of cover - Zero your weapon, clear malfunctions, speed reloads - Rapid shoulder changes and shooting from non-dominant shoulder - $150 per person for small groups
Custom-designed training tailored to your goals: $75 per hour
"After an attempted abduction of my college-age granddaughter, I became acutely aware of how vulnerable my family was. I had my wife, daughter, granddaughter and daughter-in-law attend the course. The quality of information, delivery and personal attention was exceptional in both classroom and range. My ladies came away understanding that with awareness and practice, they'll be 100 times more able to ensure their personal safety."
"I never thought 48 hours after taking that class I would have to use what he taught me...but in broad daylight at Publix in Winder I did. As soon as I saw him approaching my driver's window, I did what Ed taught me and yelled 'Get back!' Ed's class gave me the confidence to respond as I did that day."
"There is NOTHING else like this course in our area. Going to a shooting range can't prepare you for this stuff. We learned how to defend ourselves with both hand combat and gun use in close proximity situations when seconds count."
