Back 30 Outfitters operates from Orofino, Idaho in the heart of the Bitterroot Mountains surrounding the Dworshak Dam. Owner Joey and his wife Rose run all hunts year-round, handling guiding, cooking, and camp maintenance themselves. The outfitter specializes in hound-based hunts for predators and elk, offering multiple hunt types across spring, summer, and fall seasons.
Elk Hunts - Archery: September (5 days/6 nights) - $6,000 - Rifle: October (5 days/6 nights) - $6,000 - Expected harvest: 240s to 280s bulls - 5-8 archery hunters, 8-10 rifle hunters yearly - Outfitter-allocated tags available (no drawing required) - 1-on-1 upgrades available for additional $1,500
Mountain Lion (Cougar) Hunts - December 2 - March 31 (winter season) - Uses hounds with snow tracking - 6 days/7 nights - $10,000 - Groups of 2: additional 2 days included - Area produces Boone & Crockett caliber cats annually - Featured: Kristy Lee Cook and Lee Orr from The Most Wanted TV show hunt here
Bobcat Hunts - December 14 - February 16 (5-day hunts) - No tag required (valid hunting license only) - Hound hunting with dogs treeing cats - Coyote calling included 1-2 evenings free (starting end of 2025) - $3,500
Whitetail Deer Hunts - October 10 - December 1 - 5 days/6 nights - $3,000-$4,500
Turkey Hunts - April 15 - May 25 - 3 days/4 nights - $2,500 - Youth option (10-17 years): $1,800 (April 8-14)
Wolf Hunts - Winter months (dates vary based on activity) - F4WM membership reimbursement: up to $1,000 per wolf - Hider kept by successful hunter
Combination Hunts - Bear + Turkey Combo: $6,000 - Cougar + Bobcat: $12,500 - Elk + Deer Combos: $8,000-$8,500
All hunts include: - Lodging with power, water, and beds - Home-cooked meals with produce from onsite garden - Jellies, fruits, vegetables, homemade pies and desserts - Professional guide services - Field dressing and packing of harvested game
The hunting area features: - Mix of timber and open land - Steep mountain terrain with roads in units 8A and 10A for closer-range access - Overload of fruit trees (primary bear food source) - 53-mile Dworshak Reservoir with large wintering area for deer, elk, moose - High predator populations (lions, bears, wolves)

Joey owns and hunts his own hounds. He and Rose are on-site year-round and personally involved in all hunt operations—from guiding to cooking to camp maintenance. The outfitter is transparent about success rates and honest about game harvested based on conditions.
