Full description and what we offer

Hunter Techau graduated top of his class from Colorado School of Trades and has been gunsmithing professionally since 2002. After 10 years with the US Forest Service in fire and aquatics leadership, he opened Brown Dog Gunsmithing in Athol, Idaho.

"I have built my business on two ideals, quality work and exceptional customer service. Many of my customers are return customers and much of my business comes from word of mouth."

Brown Dog specializes in accurate hunting rifles built on fine quality wood stocks. Full custom rifle packages include:

  • Action work: Lug lapping to 95% contact, receiver ring facing, bolt face truing to less than .001" runout
  • Custom barreling: Chambered to your caliber, headspaced, crowned with 11-degree or recessed target crown
  • Stock work: Semi-inletted blanks finished to look like "wood growing from metal", glass bedded with free-float barrel
  • Finishing: High gloss or classic oil finish, caliber engraved (not stamped) on barrel

McMillan synthetic stocks available for customers preferring synthetic over wood.

Metal prep removes all pitting, scratches, and surface rust before bluing. Cheap bluing jobs skip this step - you'll see every blemish through fresh bluing.

Muzzle brakes threaded and centered off the bore, tolerances held within .001". Outside diameter turned to match barrel for clean appearance. Hand-tight installation allows removal for cleaning.

Hunter Finish: High-quality utility grade, weatherproof, similar to average factory finishes. Grain not completely filled but well-sealed and protected.

Exhibition Finish: Up to 20 coats on high gloss models, grain completely filled, wet sanded between coats, hand-rubbed with rottenstone. Feels smooth as glass with unequaled depth.

Both available in high gloss or classic oil finish.
