Full description and what we offer
Wild Idaho Outfitters operates from Challis across one of the largest hunting territories in central Idaho - over 150 square miles of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The rugged terrain and difficult access means minimal public hunting competition.
Idaho rifle elk hunting during the rut - Wild Idaho is a licensed outfitter in a quota area, which means guaranteed tags for hunters booking elk hunts. While Idaho has quotas on nonresident tags, outfitters in designated areas secure tags for their clients.
"Idaho is one of the few western states left that allow rifle elk hunting during the rut and over the counter tags."
| Hunt Type | Species Available | Season |
|---|---|---|
| Elk Hunts | Bull elk during rut | Early season |
| Mule Deer | Area 27 backcountry | Mid-Sep to end Oct |
| Black Bear | Spring/fall, 2-bear limit | Spring & fall |
| Wolf Hunts | No quota in Middlefork zone | Mid-winter |
| Combo Hunts | Multiple species overlap | Fall seasons |
Combo hunting sets Wild Idaho apart - Idaho allows pursuing elk, mule deer, black bear, wolf, and mountain lion during overlapping seasons. Add grouse hunting and backcountry fishing for a complete outdoor experience.
Youth hunters ages 10-17 get reduced pricing when accompanied by a paying adult
All hunts operate from wall tents in true wilderness conditions. The Frank Church area features: - Recent and distant fire history creating ideal habitat - Excellent cutthroat trout fishing - High percentage of color phase black bears (cinnamon, chocolate, blonde) - Bighorn sheep and mountain goat populations
Bear hunting includes baiting and hunting with dogs where legal, allowing selective harvest for size and color phase while avoiding sows with cubs.
Currently accepting reservations for 2026-2027 seasons. Operating under Special Use Permit in Salmon-Challis National Forest with IOGLB License #14245.
