York Outfitters has led hunters into the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness for over 90 years. Their base camp sits on four acres at the end of the road—110 square miles of exclusive outfitter access to some of Idaho's most productive big game country.
The Selway Bitterroot Wilderness spans 1.3 million acres across central Idaho. Hunting units 17 and 16A where York operates rank in the top 10 statewide for 6-point bull elk. The terrain is rugged, remote, and accessed by well-trained saddle horses and pack mules.
"Peace – Quiet – Tranquility – and lots of Bears!" — York Outfitters
They run guided hunts in early September when bulls are bugging. Average bulls score 250-320 class with 5 to 6 points. The operation doesn't shoot spike bulls—any branch antler is legal to harvest.
Hunt options: - Fully guided from base camp (horseback or vehicle) - Semi-guided (hunt on your own with guidance, meals included) - Drop camps (2-5 hours in, camp pre-set, you're on your own)
Deer hunts run in late season (November) as standalone trips or combined with elk hunts in September. Fully guided spot-and-stalk hunting with extensive glassing to locate mature bucks.
Spring and fall seasons. About 50% of kills are color phase bears—cinnamon, blonde, or chocolate—not just black.
Spring hunts require crossing Green Mountain Pass (7,150 feet) using a Tucker Snow Groomer to access the base camp. The isolation is real: virtually nobody for 40+ miles in any direction.
Hunt methods: - Spot and stalk - Hunting over bait
Options: - Standard hunt with one bear included - Hunt with hounds (additional fee) - Second bear available at "cash on table" pricing if you kill or wound
Winter hunting (November, December, January). Two hunters max per week. Chad Bohn raises and trains his own hounds for cat work—action-packed experience following well-trained dogs working the trail.
Hunting method varies by conditions: horseback, four-wheel drive, or snowmobiles.
Year-round availability in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness. Wolves are among the hardiest North American animals to hunt. The outfitter uses spot-and-stalk, calling to locate and call in packs. Depending on season, they use side-by-side vehicles, foot travel, horseback, or tracked machines. Hunters may have multiple tags during a wolf hunt.
