DMEC Training & Consulting is based in Rockford, Illinois—90 minutes from Chicago and equally close to Madison and Milwaukee. The operation runs on one core principle: everyone has room to improve, regardless of whether you're picking up a gun for the first time or you're wearing a badge.
Jared Smith, owner and lead instructor, has spent 19 years in law enforcement as a Corrections Officer in a large Northern Illinois jail. He's also a full-time member of the department's CERT team and training division. His credentials include Master Firearms Instructor (PTI), certifications through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) as a Firearms Instructor, Tactical Firearms Instructor, and Patrol Rifle Instructor. Additional certifications cover less-lethal systems, tactical medicine, active shooter response (ALERRT), red dot pistol instruction, and close-quarters battle.
He founded DMEC in 2004 and continues attending multiple training courses annually to stay current with evolving tactics and equipment.
Illinois Concealed Carry Licensing - 16-hour Illinois CCL course (civilians) - 3-hour renewal course every 5 years - Both courses include live fire qualifications—not just paperwork
Pistol Training - Proficient Pistol (8 hours): Fundamentals, marksmanship, holster draws, reloads, malfunction drills - Close Quarters Pistol (8 hours): Drawing from concealment, combat accuracy, movement, close-distance shooting (requires prerequisite) - Dynamic Pistol Movement (8 hours): Movement techniques, positional shooting, getting off the X - Defensive Red Dot Pistol (8 hours): Red dot presentation, tracking under recoil, malfunction-specific drills; rental red dot guns available ($30/day)
Rifle Training - Rifle 1 (8 hours): AR15 and AK47 fundamentals, marksmanship, handling, reloads, malfunction drills, transitions. Shooting from 5 to 100 yards. - Rifle 2 (8 hours): Building speed, distance work, movement, shooting from cover (requires Rifle 1 prerequisite)
Specialized Courses - Vehicle Dynamics (2 days): Live fire, vehicle cover points, shooting in/around/outside vehicles; includes ballistic demonstrations; physically demanding - Intro to Low Light/No Light (4 hours): Handheld flashlight techniques, night sights, weapon-mounted lights - Youth Safety Class (3 hours): Ages 8+; no live fire; firearm safety and what to do if they find a gun
Skills & Drills Workshops Short-format blocks (4 hours or less) focusing on specific topics and weapon platforms for better long-term retention.
Private Instruction One-on-one customized training. You pick the topic; they design the course. $75/hour with a two-hour minimum.

Closed law enforcement enrollment is available for individual departments. Open enrollment LE training days happen 2-3 times per year and can be certified through ILETSB for officer credit. Available courses include: - Basic Firearms Instructor - Patrol Rifle Instructor - Intro to Red Dot Pistol - Red Dot Pistol Instructor (POST certified) - Low Light Concepts
Courses can also be POST certified for other states. MTU references available upon request.
DMEC offers comprehensive security solutions for houses of worship and businesses: - Written, on-site threat assessments - Church safety team building and training - Training blocks on situational awareness, emergency medical response, de-escalation, active shooter response - Industry best practices implementation - Grant options available for churches
Classes are held at a private, outdoor range 20 minutes west of Rockford. DMEC is also fully mobile and can be hosted at your local range, club, or department. All classes shoot rain or shine.
Attendance Requirements: - Must be 21+ years old - Legal U.S. citizen - Able to legally possess a firearm under state and federal law - Illinois residents must have a valid FOID card - Students under 21 can attend if accompanied by a parent/guardian also enrolled as a student - Liability waiver required
Cancellation Policy: Deposits for concealed carry classes are non-refundable. Deposits for other classes are non-refundable but can be credited to future classes if you can't attend. No refund for no-shows without prior notice. Full refunds issued only if DMEC cancels the class. Safety dismissals result in no refund, no credit, and no future attendance.
