CNC Academy is run by Carl J Traub, a full-time firearms instructor with nearly 50 years of experience. His father was a police officer. Carl worked as a Firearms Instructor and Crew Chief with Dunbar Armored Car Division before founding CNC Academy in 2016. He's certified by USCCA, NRA Law Enforcement, and NRA Chief Range Safety Officer.

The concealed carry weapons course satisfies Illinois state requirements. You attend classroom instruction plus live fire training over two days. The curriculum goes beyond state minimums.

Range qualification:
You fire 30 rounds: 10 at 5 yards, 10 at 7 yards, 10 at 10 yards. You need 70% in the scoring area. Two chances to qualify if needed — 99% pass on the first try.

The $175 class fee is separate from Illinois state application fee ($150) and optional fingerprinting ($70-$75). Budget roughly $440-445 total to carry.
Students report significant improvements in shooting skills and confidence after his courses. He emphasizes responsible firearm ownership as a mindset, not just a permit. Ongoing education and practice are expected.

You must: - Be at least 21 years old - Have a valid Illinois FOID card - Not be prohibited under federal law - Have no misdemeanor involving force/violence in the last 5 years - Not have two or more DUI/DWI convictions in the last 5 years - Not be subject to arrest warrant or pending prosecution - Not be in treatment for alcoholism or drug abuse in the last 5 years - Complete 16 hours of approved firearms training (that's this course)
After class, you submit your application to Illinois State Police. The whole process takes time, but CNC Academy walks you through it.
