Atterbury Sportsman Club

Atterbury Sportsman Club is a registered 501(c)(4) nonprofit serving Camp Atterbury military personnel, veterans, and civilians in central Indiana. Their mission is straightforward: support active military, military veterans, and military youth through hunting, fishing, and wildlife conservation.

The club runs three main program types:

• •Wounded Hero Hunts - Founded in 2010, this program pairs wounded veterans with hunting experiences designed specifically for mental healing. They sponsor fall deer hunts and spring turkey hunts annually. The intent is simple: give wounded vets an experience that lasts a lifetime.

• •Youth Hunt Programs - Started in 2011, the youth hunt program has grown from just a handful of participants to triple participation numbers in recent years. It's evolved into more than just a hunt—it's an educational program focused on building skills and outdoor ethics.

• •Youth Fishing Events - Separate from hunting, the club organizes youth fishing outings as part of their commitment to introducing young people to outdoor traditions.

The club divides membership into two categories:

Before joining as a full member, applicants start as Associate Members. Requirements:

• •$10 initiation fee (non-refundable)
• •Submit a completed membership application
• •Get recommended by two existing members at a regular meeting
• •Be free of state or federal game violations in the last 5 years
• •Be at least 18 years old
• •Pass membership committee vote

The club targets 60% military membership and 40% civilian membership to maintain its mission focus. Currently, they're not accepting new civilian memberships—military and veteran applicants take priority.

The club maintains an active event calendar with regular meetings, merit point deadlines, and special programming throughout the year. February meetings are when annual membership votes happen.

The Wounded Hero Hunt program is sponsor-supported. Notable sponsors include The Chicken Inn and generous donations from local organizations like Ray Skillman, Jackson Masonic Lodge #146, and Edinburgh American Legion Post 233.

Without sponsors, the club wouldn't be able to help as many wounded veterans and youth as they do.

The club regularly provides first aid and emergency response training to members. Recent sessions have covered everything from snake bites to seizures, led by certified firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs.

The club's vision emphasizes quality outdoor experiences focused on education, fellowship, and camaraderie. They promote lawful and ethical sportsmanship in hunting and fishing for both military and civilian members.
