Full description and what we offer
First Shield Defense operates at 2727 Lofty Drive, Door 6, Fort Wayne, IN 46808 as a complete self-defense training facility combining firearms instruction, martial arts, and grappling under one roof.
This isn't a lecture hall. FSD runs four primary training tracks:
- •Apex Concealed Carry Program - Focuses on responsible firearm use and the legal side of self-defense. Instructors Cody W. and Rich A. teach you to problem-solve under stress using real-world scenarios. Rich specializes in helping new gun owners move past their fears and build actual competency. Classes run daily: Monday-Thursday at 5:30 PM, plus additional slots throughout the week.
- •Nomad Krav Maga® - The modern, comprehensive version taught by instructor Heath B. Combines striking, grappling, firearms, knife work, stick fighting, and conditioning into one system. Classes Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 PM.
- •Black Market BJJ - Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for both tournament training and real-world self-defense application. Three skill levels:
- •BJJ Basics: Monday at 7:00 PM
- •Intermediate BJJ: Wednesday at 7:00 PM
- •Advanced BJJ: Friday at 7:00 PM
- •Members-Only Open Mat: Sunday at 5:00 PM
- •Youth & Women-Specific Programs - Youth Self Defense runs Monday and Thursday at 4:30 PM. Women's Only Self Defense classes Tuesday and Friday at 4:30 PM. Grappling for Self Defense Friday at 6:00 PM. Youth BJJ Wednesday at 4:30 PM.
Rising ammo prices don't have to stop your training progression.
FSD addresses the ammunition cost problem directly. Members get: - Free range trips - Special free ammunition training days - Discounted ammunition through partner programs - SIRT Training Pistols (laser-based dry fire) for skill building without burning rounds - Laser training systems for efficient, round-count-smart practice
The facility prioritizes training efficiency so every round you fire actually counts toward measurable improvement.
- •Kyle R., Founder & Chief Instructor - Built FSD on the principle that people with "helping others" in their DNA deserve customized training, not one-size-fits-all instruction. His vision: people empowered to take control of their own safety.
- •Cody W., Apex Instructor - Specializes in decision-making under stress. Uses creative scenarios to test your judgment while keeping safety the priority.
- •Rich A., Apex Instructor - Patient approach to building confidence in new shooters. Extensive firearms industry background. Stays available for ongoing member support beyond class time.
- •Heath B., Krav Maga Instructor - Extensive combat sports and martial arts training. Emphasizes practical techniques and situational awareness.
Three-step process: 1. Schedule your free consultation (no obligation) 2. Visit "The Den" (their facility) and talk with instructors about your goals 3. Start training with a plan built around your specific needs
Key Differentiator: FSD combines firearms, striking martial arts, AND grappling in one facility with cross-training benefits most gun ranges don't offer. The legal education piece in Apex program is explicitly spelled out—not just "know your rights" platitudes but actual decision-making frameworks for use-of-force scenarios.
- •For people afraid: Beginner-friendly programs and supportive instructors who recognize that hesitation with firearms or combat techniques is normal. Rich A. specifically built his teaching style around this.
- •For people confused about the law: Apex Concealed Carry program includes legal education as a core component, not an afterthought. You learn responsible firearm use AND the actual legal framework.
- •For people broke on ammo: The SIRT pistol and laser training systems mean you can sharpen fundamentals without buying centerfire rounds. Free range trips and special ammo days keep ongoing training affordable.
- •For people wanting real-world skill: All instruction emphasizes practical application, not competition points or perfect form. Scenarios test your decision-making, not just your technique.
