Soap Creek Outfitters has been running hunts since 1988 from 33271 Highway J3T in Unionville, Iowa. Owner Brian Lindberg grew up hunting these rolling hills, creek bottoms, hardwoods, and farm fields—and turned that deep local knowledge into a serious whitetail destination.
Southeast Iowa was once a well-kept secret but is now recognized as one of the top trophy whitetail regions in the country. The area's terrain, water availability, and quality genetics produce mature bucks consistently in the 150-180+ inch range.
Soap Creek describes their model as semi-guided. Here's what that means:
This approach works. Repeat clients regularly report seeing 10-30 bucks per day during peak season, with multiple opportunities at 150+ class bucks.
| Hunt Type | Duration | Price | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archery | 6 days | $2,800 | Includes lodging |
| Muzzleloader | 6 days | $2,800 | Includes lodging |
Notable track record: - 2020: 100% success rate for bow hunters, 75% for gun hunters - 2023: High success rate for bow hunters - Clients have taken bucks scoring 150-210+ inches - Trail cameras document the caliber of deer available year-round
Brian's advice: Stay in your stand. Don't scout—he's already done it. Look for mass in the antlers to judge a buck's age. A 140-inch buck may be a shooter where you're from, but here, wait for 150+ class deer. Patience pays.
The main tract consists of: - 800 acres total: 80-100 acres in crops (corn, beans), rest in hardwoods (white oak, red oak) - Additional parcels: Two 115-acre tracts available, each 45% cropland/45% hardwoods - Water availability: Abundant water sources keep deer from concentrating in vulnerable areas - New for 2024: Additional 6×6 shooting houses added
| Hunt Type | Duration | Price | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkey | 3 days | $800 | Includes lodging; abundant birds in the area |
| Coyote (off-season) | 3 days | $600 | No bag limit; year-round opportunity |
"From day one I was in awe of the deer numbers I saw. Out of 7 days of hunting I saw a shooter buck five of the seven days. I saw eleven bucks just in the last two days I was there...You really run a first class operation." — Mike from PA
1. Intentionally small operation — Brian caps the number of hunters specifically because large groups and trophy hunting don't mix 2. Deep local knowledge — 30+ years of hunting this specific country personally 3. Quality over volume — Insurance agency background gives him access to the area's best private land 4. Trail camera documentation — Hunters often get photos of the buck they'll hunt before arriving 5. Consistent high-quality bucks — Regular reports of 150-170+ inch deer, with multiple P&Y and B&C entries over the years
