Full description and what we offer
Whiteout Outfitters has been running guided spring snow goose hunts since 1999, when the Light Goose Conservation Order opened up spring hunting to help manage the overabundant mid-continental snow goose population (estimated 5-10 million birds). They've traveled the Central and Mississippi Flyways through Missouri, South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and Arkansas—but Missouri is where they focus most of their effort.
Most hunts operate in Northwest Missouri, north of the famous Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge (formerly Squaw Creek NWR) near Mound City. This area sits directly in the snow geese's northbound migration corridor and provides consistent hunting conditions despite weather and migration pattern variations.
They also run hunts in: - Kansas spring snow goose hunts - Nebraska spring snow goose hunts - Iowa spring snow goose hunts - Arkansas hunts (when needed)
Their setup uses:
| Equipment | Details |
|---|---|
| Decoy spreads | 1,200-3,000 decoys per hunt |
| Decoy brands | Tanglefree Snow Goose Slammer Socks, Skyfly decoys, Sillosocks |
| Blinds | Tanglefree Ground Ghost, Hardcore Run N Gunner layout blinds, Rogers Goose Buster frame blinds |
| Calling | Electronic callers (e-callers allowed under conservation order) |
| Gear | Unplugged shotguns, magazine extensions accepted |
Guides adapt daily to wind changes and migration patterns. They're hunters themselves with deep understanding of goose behavior and movement.
The Light Goose Conservation Order allows unlimited bag limits, no plug requirements, e-callers permitted, and extended hunting hours—different from regular waterfowl seasons.
Snow geese are overabundant and damage Arctic breeding grounds and agricultural fields. These hunts directly support wildlife management. Guides explain that hunting numbers and hunting success matter less than participating in the conservation effort.
They handle the logistics. Hunters need to provide: - Valid hunting license - Appropriate shotgun and ammo - Weather-appropriate clothing
They provide details on: - Federal waterfowl regulations - State licensing requirements - Lodging options - What to bring - Deposit and cancellation policies - Weather and field rules - Dog policy
