Full description and what we offer
Steve Levitt founded Steve's Firearm Instruction in 2013 with a straightforward mission: get new shooters started safely and help seasoned shooters sharpen their fundamentals. His credentials are solid. He holds a Bachelor's degree (cum laude) in criminal justice from Curry College, graduated from the police academy, and served two years as an Auxiliary Police Officer with the Randolph Police Department. He's trained alongside special operations units and task forces, bringing that law enforcement discipline to every class.
"I began this business to start new shooters on the right path to safety and to help them through their journey as new firearm owners. I want to pass on the skills I have obtained through my extensive experience and training. I strive to make the uncomfortable, comfortable and to make those who feel nervous, confident."
All courses at Steve's are state-approved "Basic Firearm Safety Courses" under MGL Ch. 140, Sec. 131P (a). Complete one class, and you're eligible to apply for your License to Carry (LTC) or Firearms Identification Card (FID). You only take one class—just one—to qualify.
$180 per person
This is the hands-on option. You'll learn: - Safety fundamentals and gun handling rules - Pistol types and how they work - Marksmanship basics - Multiple firing positions - Practical range exercises (one-on-one coaching) - Storage requirements - Pistol sports and recreational shooting
Firearms and ammunition provided. No experience necessary. Classes stay small so everyone gets real attention on the range.
$125 per person
No shooting, but plenty of hands-on learning. You'll handle common pistols, rifles, and shotguns while learning: - Safe gun handling rules - How to identify and unload different firearms - Ammunition basics - Cleaning and maintenance - Storage options - Ammunition types
Perfect if you want classroom instruction without the range component, or if you prefer to test the waters before committing to live fire.
$50 per firearm
Steve also offers focused workshops on maintaining your pistol. Learn the right tools, proper disassembly, cleaning techniques, and reassembly—all under direct instruction. Bring your own gun or use one of Steve's. Available by request only, so you can schedule around your schedule.
Think of the class as the key that opens the application door. Here's what happens:
1. Take your class - One session, one-on-one shooting included 2. You're now qualified - Certificate of completion satisfies state prerequisite 3. Apply with your town - Visit or call your local police department to apply for LTC or FID 4. Steve stays available - Even after class ends, Steve answers follow-up questions about the application process, firearm selection, or safety questions
Each Massachusetts town handles applications differently, but most police departments are used to fielding these questions. Steve helps walk you through it.
Reviews consistently highlight the same things:
One student summed it up: "We did our research and we're looking for a course that was going to make us as ready as possible... Steve's class was everything and more."
