Full description and what we offer
Mize Firearms Training delivers Concealed Pistol License (CPL) training across Michigan through NRA-certified instructors. The operation is built around small class sizes and personalized attention—not lecture-hall crowds. Owner and primary instructor is a US Marine Corps veteran who emphasizes hands-on safety and practical skill development.
"New shooters welcome" — and they mean it. You don't need previous experience. You don't need to own a firearm. You don't need to be 21 (participants can be 13+, though you must be 21 to actually purchase a pistol).
If you show up without a gun, Mize provides one for free during class. The reasoning is solid: buy the right gun after you've trained, not before. Class covers how to select a pistol that fits your hand, your intended use, and your comfort level.
Once you complete the course, here's the process:
1. Take your completion certificate to your county clerk's office 2. Submit CPL application + $105 fee 3. County clerk provides receipt; you take it to local police/sheriff for fingerprinting 4. Background check runs; county gun board issues or denies license within 45 days 5. Total time: 1-3 months depending on your county
| Topic | Details |
|---|---|
| Pistol-Free Zones | Casinos, courts, hospitals, schools, churches, sports venues, bars. Parking lots are exempt. |
| Police Encounters | Must immediately disclose you're carrying. Failure = $500 fine + 6-month suspension first offense. |
| Transport | Unloaded, separated from ammo, locked in trunk = legal without CPL |
| State Parks | CPL holders can carry on Michigan DNR property |
First-time question: "Do I need to bring my own gun?" Answer: No. Free loaner available. Most students wait until after class to purchase.
Before any live fire, students work with dummy ammunition in the classroom to practice: - Proper grip and stance - Loading and unloading safely - Trigger control fundamentals - Range safety rules
Then you move to the pistol range for live-fire drills under direct supervision.
No refunds on any classes. All sales final.
Large CPL courses can feel like you're getting cattle-prodded through paperwork and safety rules. Mize's small-group focus means the instructor notices if you're gripping wrong, if you're flinching before the shot, or if you have a specific question that needs 2 minutes of direct attention. That's the difference between completing a requirement and actually learning to shoot.
