Full description and what we offer
Jaime Martinez teaches concealed pistol license classes that actually work for first-time gun owners. He's a USCCA-certified instructor with law enforcement experience, and he designed the curriculum around what people actually need to know—not what sounds impressive.
The Instructor Approach
"My goal is the best student learning experience. We learn all about how subtle things make a world of difference. This is done in a very open and comfortable classroom setting with questions welcomed anytime."
Jaime skips the corporate training-video nonsense. Classes are hands-on and entertaining. If you've never shot before, that's his specialty—he works 1-on-1 at the range and promises you'll feel confident by the end of the day or you take the class again free.
Class Size & Setup
Maximum 12 students per class. The classroom and indoor range are at the same location:
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Location | Firearm Exchange, 30305 Schoolcraft Rd, Livonia, MI 48150 (96 & Merriman) |
| Class Cost | $100 |
| Gun Rental + Ammo | $15 |
| Range Fee | $10 |
| Hours | 10 AM–6 PM |
You don't need to own a gun. Testing different rental firearms during class is actually a good way to figure out what works for you before you buy.
The class covers everything required for Michigan CPL eligibility:
Morning Session - Universal safety rules and clearing procedures (semi-automatics and revolvers) - Types of handguns: revolvers, semi-automatics, striker-fired designs - Magazine operation and ammunition basics - Selecting a handgun for yourself - Defensive shooting fundamentals: grip, shooting platform, sight picture, trigger control - Unsighted fire and point shooting techniques
Afternoon Session (After Lunch) - Michigan legal use of force: reasonable force vs. deadly force - When deadly force is justified and when it ends - Civil liability issues and what prosecutors want to know - Defending your home vs. defending property - Encounters with law enforcement - Recognizing threats and avoiding violent situations - What happens after a shooting incident: phone calls, police arrival, statements, legal consequences
Range Portion - Marksmanship fundamentals - 1-on-1 coaching from Jaime - Aimed shooting and point shooting practice - Safety drills - Visual test covering material
What to Bring - Your own pistol (if you have one)—unloaded and cased for transport - Writing pad and pen - Snacks or drinks (coffee is free, other beverages available for purchase) - No ammunition in the classroom
For complete beginners, Martinez also teaches a "Home Firearm Safety" or "Introduction to Firearms" class:
This is a great stepping stone before the CPL class.
Livonia is just outside Detroit, making the class easily accessible from: - Southfield - Farmington Hills - Redford - Royal Oak - Canton - Westland - Plymouth - Detroit proper
Michigan requires mandatory firearm training before issuing a concealed pistol license. This class meets that legal requirement and actually teaches you how to think about self-defense responsibly—not just how to pass a test.
