Chimney Rock Outfitters has been running guided hunts in the heart of Montana for over 140 years. What started as a family operation in 1878 has evolved into one of the region's most respected outfitting services, maintaining that same commitment to tradition, expertise, and authentic backcountry hunting.
Unlike outfitters competing for public land, Chimney Rock controls over 40 sections of exclusively-managed private land south of Livingston. This means low-pressure hunts in terrain where elk, deer, and moose populations are thriving and well-managed. The property includes 2,000 acres of irrigated alfalfa and grass hay meadows that draw massive herds at night—hunters routinely witness 200+ head of elk still feeding at daybreak. USFWP spring elk counts in these drainages exceed 1,000 head annually, with populations increasing 15-20% yearly.
| Game Animal | Season | Hunt Style | Group Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elk | 6-day hunts | Spot-and-stalk, calling | Max 4 archery, 6 rifle per week |
| Mule & Whitetail Deer | 7-day hunts | Spot-and-stalk | Max 4 archery, 8 rifle per week |
| Moose | 7-day hunts | Spot-and-stalk, calling | Max 4 archery, 8 rifle per week |
| Black Bear | 7-day hunts | Spot-and-stalk | Max 4 archery, 8 rifle per week |
Elk hunts target mature bulls in prime habitat. The 90%+ success rate on 6x6 bulls or better reflects careful herd management and expert guide knowledge. Hunters arrive Saturday at 1:00 PM and depart the following Friday by noon.
Deer hunts focus on trophy-class mule deer and whitetail bucks. Guides understand movement patterns in both open country and timber, adjusting tactics to terrain and seasonal feeding behavior.
Moose hunts target thick willow bottoms and mountain meadows where trophy bulls thrive. With only 4-8 hunters per week and one guide for every two hunters, the low-pressure environment maximizes your odds of connecting on a mature animal.
Black bear hunts emphasize spot-and-stalk techniques in spring and fall. Guides have deep knowledge of bear movement, seasonal food sources, and proven tracking strategies.
One guide for every two hunters on all hunts—not a ratio where guides are spread thin across larger groups.
Chimney Rock's camp sits alongside clear-flowing West Pine Creek in the Montana wilderness. The operation includes two cabins:
Guests regularly praise the camp as "warm, clean, and rustic—nothing fancy, everything you need." The sounds of West Pine Creek running past the cabins are restorative. Hearty, home-cooked meals are served daily. Coffee, homemade cookies, and snacks are always available.
The property is a high mountain plateau at approximately 7,800 feet offering views of Livingston, the Bridger, Crazy, and Absarokee/Beartooth Mountains, and Paradise Valley. Multiple drainages provide varied hunting experiences:
Each drainages presents rolling to steep terrain with abundant game sign. The 2,000 acres of irrigated meadows feed elk and deer nightly before they move to higher timber at dawn.
Outfitters bring over 50 years of combined guiding experience. Guides understand:
"I've hunted with many outfitters in several western states and I've got to say, Chimney Rock Outfitters treats you the best. Their down-home, comfortable hunt camp is just right: warm, clean, rustic. Nothing fancy here – everything you need and nothing you don't." — B. Ferris
"I had the best elk hunt of my life with Chimney Rock Outfitters. Justin and Judy are the best. Our guide Jim made every day awesome and we got up close on lots of good bulls. The accommodations were top notch in every way. The entire week was amazing!" — B. Kramme
Chimney Rock enforces a strict wounded animal policy. If a wounded animal cannot be retrieved, the hunt for that species ends. This reflects a commitment to herd quality and ethical harvest practices.
