Full description and what we offer
Elk Creek Family Outfitters runs guided hunts on the 5E Ranch, a 5,200-acre private property 100 miles north of Billings. The landscape consists of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forests interspersed with grass meadows, eight coulees (canyons over 100 feet deep), and spring-fed water sources that hold elk year-round. Typically 25-30 mature bull elk inhabit the ranch during the rut.
All hunts are fair chase for free-roaming, resident wild elk. Dave and Abe Hein are bow hunters themselves who call, rattle, and know how to bring bulls in—sometimes on the run. From the cabin deck at first light, you'll hear multiple bulls bugling. Hunters report close encounters with satellite bulls, 6x6 and 7x7 trophy bulls, and herd bulls in the 340-370 range.
"We will put you in the middle of bugling bulls, the rest is up to you!"
Landowner-sponsored non-resident licenses only
Stay in a fully-furnished log cabin originally built in 1915, recently renovated. Features include:
Home-cooked meals served in the ranch house (hunters provide groceries). The cabin overlooks hunting grounds with morning bugling audible from the deck.
No alcohol, smoking, or vaping on the ranch. Hunters prepare their own meals from groceries/snacks they bring.
Dave and Abe Hein are relentless, knowledgeable guides who live and breathe elk hunting. Multiple guest testimonials highlight:
The 5E Ranch was homesteaded in the early 1900s by Rosalie's five great uncles—Albert, Edgar, Harry, John, and Ralph Wildin—five brothers from Gloucester, England. The 5 E brand represents these five Englishmen. Today, Dave and Rosalie Hein, their son Abe, and Abe's wife Jessica operate the ranch and guide service.
