Full description and what we offer
Sun Canyon Lodge operates three backcountry camps accessed by horseback into the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex on Montana's Rocky Mountain Front. The main elk camps sit at 5,000-6,000 feet elevation in the Sun River drainage, six to eight hours into the wilderness. Their mule deer camp sits seven miles into Lewis and Clark National Forest.
Camps are set up early and fully operational when you arrive. Sleeping tents are 14' x 16' with cots and wood stoves. Family-style meals come from a separate mess tent with a full-time cook. Hunts are fully guided—you bring your weapon and personal gear, they provide horses, guides, meals, and stock.
Specialty Hunts - Bighorn sheep (permits in three areas surrounding the lodge) - Antelope with special permits - Mountain lion hunts with hounds (winter months, individually scheduled)
Success Rate: 40% elk harvest, 80% deer—consistently over 30 years
If backcountry isn't your style, hunt from the lodge with cabin accommodations and meals included. Horseback and four-wheel drive hunts for elk, mule deer, and whitetail. Perfect for father-son or husband-wife teams.
Drop camp option available—bring your own gear or use lodge equipment. Call for pricing and availability.
Sun Canyon also runs pack trips, fishing trips, and welcomes weddings, reunions, and retreats. The lodge sits in a scenic gulch with cabins, main lodge with restaurant and bar, stables, and creek access.
