Full description and what we offer
ScotShot LLC operates firearms training courses at WeShoot USA Public Range in Lakewood, New Jersey. The company is led by instructors holding nationally-recognized certifications from both the NRA and USCCA, with most also certified as Range Safety Officers or Chief Range Safety Officers.
Every ScotShot course—whether NRA, USCCA, or proprietary—emphasizes three core concepts: Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude. Safety isn't a checkbox; it's woven into every class from day one. All instruction follows the established firearm safety principles: muzzle direction awareness, target and backstop identification, trigger discipline, and loaded firearm handling protocols.
Non-Shooters with Firearms in the Home For family members of gun owners who've never handled a firearm, this class covers firearm design, function, unloading, and safe handling.
Introduction to Your Own Firearm Designed for new gun owners, this course focuses on one specific firearm. Students learn parts, function, ammunition specifics, standing position shooting fundamentals, basic live-fire work, and cleaning/maintenance.
NRA Basic Pistol (Instructor-Led) The NRA's flagship pistol course. Covers revolver and semi-automatic design, ammunition function, handgun fundamentals, grip, stance, bench-rest and two-handed standing positions, and live-fire practice to an accuracy standard. Students age 14+ can enroll.
NRA Basic Rifle (Instructor-Led) Similar structure to Basic Pistol but focused on rifle fundamentals, shooting positions, and marksmanship standards.
USCCA Basic Defensive Pistol Introduces semi-automatic pistols and modern revolvers as defensive tools. Content includes safety review, handgun actions/functions, defensive ammunition selection, defensive shooting fundamentals, presentation, stance, aiming, and trigger control. Classroom exercises in handling, non-sighted aiming, and SIRT pistol training precede range work. Legal aspects of defensive handgun use are discussed. Students age 16+ can enroll and should bring 50 rounds of factory ammunition.
USCCA Women's Defensive Pistol A women-only class written by women, led by an all-woman instructor team, addressing specific questions women have about handgun ownership and use. Content mirrors the Basic Defensive Pistol course but with discussion of why women own handguns and how approaches may differ from men. Ages 16+. Students receive the USCCA "Women's Handgun and Self-Defense Fundamentals" manual.
USCCA Home Defense Fundamentals Designed for home defense focus, introducing concepts such as concealment, cover, movement with a firearm, and drawing/reholstering a loaded handgun. General legal aspects of defensive firearms use are included.
NRA Certified Pistol Instructor For shooters wanting to teach pistol skills. Requires completion of the NRA Basic Pistol course at 90%+ and includes teaching methodology, student evaluation, and certification standards.
NRA Certified Rifle Instructor Similar pathway for rifle instruction. Requires NRA Basic Rifle course completion and rifle teaching methodology.
USCCA Certified Instructor (CCHDF) A two-part program: an eight-hour online eLearning module followed by a two-day in-person classroom and range component. Instructor candidates must have five or more people enrolled to run the course. Upon certification, instructors can teach four pre-defined USCCA courses: Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals, Basics of Defensive Pistol, Concealed Carry Fundamentals, and Home Defense. They can also teach seven "Mini-Classes" (approximately two hours each) and construct custom courses from the CCHDF slide deck. Maintaining certification requires teaching or co-teaching a minimum of 20 students per year.
USCCA Countering the Mass Shooter Threat Comprehensive training on recognizing active-shooter risks and creating response plans. Content covers U.S. mass shooting history, media coverage vs. reality, firearms used in such events (caliber, ammunition, timing), police response strategies and timelines, aggressive victim response, survivor mindset, first-aid skills, perpetrator recognition, environmental response planning, angles, cover and concealment, and practical problem-solving. The course is generally taught-to-order and can be customized for specific environments like houses of worship, schools, or workplaces.
USCCA Emergency First Aid Supporting medical response in shooting incidents.
ScotShot prioritizes personalized instruction. Classes remain small and comfortable, allowing instructors to address individual learning needs and ensure each student grasps the core concepts.
Most beginner courses don't require you to own a firearm—training equipment is provided. If you bring your own, you'll need factory-loaded ammunition (typically 50 rounds for pistol, 100 rounds for rifle, depending on the course). ScotShot provides manuals, classroom and range facilities, and light refreshments. All courses issue completion certificates.
